Breaking: The Monash Freeway has been shut down this morning as police deal with a suspected gunman.

Update: Vic police have shot the the suspect on the freeway.

Earlier, Melbourne news media reported that police were in a standoff with a man brandishing what appeared to be a weapon.

“Police are currently in the vicinity of the Eastlink interchange, at the Monash on-ramp, responding to an incident,” a police statement said.

A witness who identified himself as Ben called into ABC Radio Melbourne earlier and described the incident as “standoff” between a man aged about 50 or 60 and police.

“They had guns drawn on the assailant,” Ben said.

“I don’t know if it was a pursuit and they have pulled him up over there or why he’s in that position.”

VicTraffic statement:

All inbound lanes of the Monash Freeway remain closed between Heatherton Road and Eastlink due to a police incident. Exit the freeway and use the Princes Highway as an alternative. Re-join the Monash via Jacksons or Wellington roads. Allow extra time.
