A racing pigeon that cross the Pacfic from the United States to Australia will be killed by authorities.

Joe the Pigeon was found thousands of kilometres away from Oregon weeks after it went missing on the US west coast.

A Melbourne man, Kevin Celli-Bird, said today that he had silvered Joe the Pigeon at his backyard on Boxing Day.

The wayward pigeon was lost in a race in Oregon in the US on October 29th 2020.

It’s believed the bird managed to pitch a ride on a ship crossing the world.

The bird has been living in humbly in a suburban Melbourne backyard since then.

Authorities now consider Joe a threat to biosecurity.

The pigeon will need to be caught first.

“I said, ‘To be honest, I can’t catch it. I can get within 500 millimetres of it and then it moves.”, Celli-Bird told media.

When Joe the pigeon first arrived, Kevin Celli-Bird (no relation to the bird) managed to catch Joe and read a blue tag on his foot.

Through a Google search, he was able to contact the Oklahoma-based American Pigeon Union. They confirmed that Joe was registered to an owner in Montgomery, Alabama, news services said.

There were concerns Joe the pigeon could be carrying diseases and will need to be caught and killed soon.

More to come.
